I finally decided to set myself up a myspace page. It seemed like a good way to stay in touch with friends and family. It has been just that. In fact I am in contact with a few cousins that I haven't talked to in years. Good stuff. In fact, one of said cousins messaged me recently, and she was unhappy with the boring look of my page. She said, "You need to pimp your page. Pimp it up man!". This got me thinking. When did the word Pimp take on a positive meaning?
I blame the man to your left. Don "Magic" Juan. He DOES make the Pimp life look like a good time. Like say, Halloween, or a Costume party. If that's what pimp means, sign me up. When I was a kid though, if someone called me a Pimp I don't think i would have been complimented. I was taught to respect women. Not sell them. Strike one for "pimpin". I also had a healthy respect for the Law. (Or fear of jail) Strike two. When I think of "The Life" I see more Terrance Howard in Hustle and Flow, than the Magic Man. It's hard out there for a Pimp indeed.
I am surprised that a woman (as is my cousin) would use Pimp the way she did, since the Pimp Game is one that women are not even allowed to play. In fact they are the equipment. I just feel like words mean things.
As, for my dull ass Myspace page, I have to admit, my Pimp hand is weak. I don't own a lime-aid colored suit. In my closet, you won't find a fuzzy hat, nor a cane that is hollowed out so that I can take a beverage supply on the go. No platform shoes. No bling. And my wheels stop spinning when my car does.
Hopefully people will get past the dull LOOK of my page and enjoy what I hope is some sweet!! content. Actually I just send them here to the blog! Here I am dull, but colorfully so.
Maybe you should get a technicolor dreamcoat? Its got the pizzaz of the pimp aesthetic without any of the misogyny. Now that would make a nifty myspace photo...
